Assesses, plans, coordinates and evaluates the clinical and operational functions of the nursing unit to ensure quality, cost effective health care is provided by an educated and competent staff; Promotes a safe environment and performs all related-job responsibilities in a safe manner; Maintains clinical and professional competency as appropriate to the age, developmental stages and special needs of the patients served. The Director of Nursing is responsible for the 24 hour / 7 day a week operation of the unit.

· Chair the Education Committee to include:
o Orientation of New hires
o Competencies of staff
o Education of Preceptors
· Concurrent Quality Audits as assigned monthly
· Employee health
· Project Manager for new projects as needed
· Coordinates the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
· Ensures that unit operations and employees are in compliance with the Nursing Practice Act, regulatory agency standards and policies and procedures as defined by the Hospital.
· Organizes and coordinates all nursing unit functions to provide for a smooth, cost effective operation.
· Delegates effectively and holds staff accountable for quality and clinical outcomes.
· Accepts responsibility and accountability for total unit functioning.
· Serves as a role model in all aspects of job performance and human relations skills.
· Demonstrates competence in the application of principles of management.
· Assumes responsibility in the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel.
· Responsible for interview, selection and supervision of nursing personnel in the department along with the Chief Clinical Officer.
· Responsible for conducting annual evaluations of the nursing staff.
· Allocates resources to meet unit needs.
· Conducts staff meetings at regular intervals to exchange information and promote dialogue.
· Promotes staff development through education, performance evaluation and identification of mutual goals that enhance continued professional growth.
· Functions as a team member of the Clinical Services Department.
· Performs nursing care, assists with treatments, therapies, procedures, and administers medications as necessary.
· Demonstrates and promotes evidence based practice.
· Provides and assesses effectiveness of patient and family education.
· Participates with Performance Improvement activities to improve quality of nursing care, promote patient outcomes and provide a cost effective environment for patient care.
· Serves as team leader for Performance Improvement teams as assigned.
· Facilitates staff nurse participation in quality improvement, committee and governance activities.
· Collects, analyzes and utilizes data for improved clinical outcomes.
· Assists in development of policies, procedures and standards reflective of current practice / literature.
· Assists in developing nursing yearly goals and objectives.
· Responsible for counseling, budgeting, staffing, scheduling, problem solving, delegating, evaluating and employee selection in collaboration with the Chief Clinical Officer.
· Responsible for recognizing abuse and following policy for making appropriate referrals/interventions.
· Develops an understanding of responsibilities for participation in Performance Improvement activities and participates in such activities.
· Participates in the Hazardous Material Program. Hazards include exposure to blood and body fluids, possible communicable diseases, sharp objects and instruments, assorted chemicals and gasses as listed in the Hazardous Materials Program Manual.
· Complies with measures for preventing exposure to blood borne pathogens.
· Adheres to attendance policy, as outlined in the Employee Handbook.
· Demonstrates professional conduct and complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
· Adheres to all components of the Hospital Compliance Plan in performing job duties and reports any violations or suspected violations of the Plan to the Compliance Officer.
· Complies with established Safety and Patient Safety Program practices.
· Performs other duties as assigned or delegated by the Chief Clinical Officer.
· Limits access to protected health information (PHI) to the information reasonably necessary to do the job and shares information only on a need to know basis for work purposes.
MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS (SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION)
Graduate of accredited School of Nursing
Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing preferred
Current state licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse OH/WV
Eight years nursing experience.
Minimum five 2-3 years progressive managerial experience.
Current BLS and ACLS certification.
Critical thinking and ability to concentrate.
Able to respond quickly to changes in patient and / or unit conditions.
Able to work in high stress environment
Able to speak, write and read English
